Gombe Governor, others receive Best performing Governors Award in Covid-19, Routine Immunization.
The Award is in recognition of their contributions to health care development; SGF Boss Mustapha, Minister of Health, Ex.Sec.NPHCDA.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has received the Award of Best Performing Governor in the North East in the area of Covid-19 vaccination and other health interventions.
The Governor was presented with the award alongside some Governors representing their respective geographical zones at the Ladi Kwali Hall, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya was represented by his Deputy Manassah Daniel Jatau at the 2022 Immunization Performance Awards, African Vaccination Week, where fourteen other Governor’s were awarded with Best performing Governors award, with two each representing the six geopolitical zones and two overall best in Covid-19 and routine immunization.
Other Governors include Nasarawa State Governor Engineer Abdullah Sule,who is also overall best in Covid-19 Vaccination, Governor of Ebonyi state David Umahi who is also overall best in routine Immunization, Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.
Others are Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, Ogun State Governor, Adedapo Oluseun Abiodun, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umar Fintiri, Jigawa State Governor, Alh. Badaru Abubakar, Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Nasiru El-rufai, Abia State Governor, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, Cross Rivers State Governor, Benedict Bengioushuye Ayade, Edo State Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwolu.
Shortly before the presentation of the awards the Secretary to the Federal Government Barr. Boss Mustapha and Minister of Health, Dr Osagie said, the awards were in recognition of their outstanding contributions in routine immunizations and Covid-19 vaccination and other health interventions towards limiting rates of deaths resulting from preventable diseases.
They commended the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Development Partners, Governors, Traditional and community leaders, religious leaders and all those contributing to Primary healthcare delivery in the country.
Mr. Boss Mustapha who is also the Chairman, Presidential Steering Committee on Covid-19 stressed that Covid-19 is not in hurry to leave Nigeria therefore people should not relent in observing the non pharmaceutical measures of face marks, hand washing, and to ensure they are vaccinated against the virus and other killer diseases.
The Minister of Health congratulated the winners and recipients of the awards and enjoined them to exert more effort and rid the country of diseases towards saving lives.
The Executive Secretary, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Faisal Shuaib said, fifteen Governor’s out of thirty- six shall be awarded for their immense contributions to Routine Immunization and Covid-19 vaccination, pointing out that, those selected are those who have provided needed leadership qualities, Awareness and Demand Creation, Human Resource Development, Financial Support High level of accountability, and hardwork.
Highlighting on the criteria used for the selection of the deserving Awardees, the coordinator of the Selection Team, Dr. Rodah explained that,the process include those who have vaccinated over 50% of the targeted population before March 31st, 2022, and the extent of sensitisation among others.
She further explained that, there shall be Award for Best Performers of Covid-19 vaccination and Routine Immunization in each of the six geopolitical zones and overall best in either Routine Immunization or Covid-19 as well as most improved on Covid-19 and most improved on Routine Immunization.
Goodwill messages came from the Chairman Governing Board, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Daniel Iya, Representative of the Sultan of Sokoto and Emir of Argungu, Alh. Samaila Muhammed Mera, Christian Association of Nigeria, Bill and Belinda Gates Foundation, United States Centre for Disease Control, UNICEF, and World Health Organization who commended the Ministry of Health and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency for promoting primary Healthcare services in the country through rewarding of excellence.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has expressed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with development partners towards the upliftment of the standard of the living of the peopleof Gombe State.
The governor made the position known while receiving a delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund who paid him a courtesy visit on the sidelines of its inspection visit to Gombe State.
He appreciated the support of the UN agency in executing projects especially in critical sectors of education and health.
The governor noted that Gombe State is a beneficiary of many collaborative projects and programmes with UNICEF, citing the successful mopping up and enrolment of about 400,000 out of school children through BESDA as one of the instances where Gombe benefited a lot.
He specifically recognised the inputs of UNICEF and other UN agencies in drafting the State’s ten year development plan which he said aligns with the UN’s SDGs and UNICEF’s vision and mission.
“Our ten year development plan aligned with the targets of SDGs, Unicef and all United Nations agencies that are collaborating with us towards improving the standard of living of our people,” he confirmed.
Governor Inuwa intimated the team of his administration’s great achievements of providing healthcare services to the people.
“It may interest you to know that, to ensure proper provision of health care services at the grassroots, in less than three years we were able to provide at least one functional healthcare facility in each of the 114 wards of Gombe State”.
The governor told the visiting UNICEF team that Gombe State has concluded plans to engage 440 health workers to augment the strength of human resources for more productivity in the health sector.
The governor said, “We plan to engage an average of 40 health personnel in each of the 11 Local Governments. Not only that we also insist that each health worker attends to his place of work by taking inventory, the initiative we brought of having biometric attendance and records from all the staff of primary health care and general hospitals is helping us a lot to provide necessary man power in the sector and ensure efficiency and productivity”.
He pledged his government’s continued support towards execution of collaborative programmes with UNICEF. “Our doors are open, any day any time, we look forward to jointly working with you in the execution of projects and programmes that especially help our younger ones.
“I also want to assure you, that not only me but the whole of my cabinet and the people of Gombe are supportive of your coming and the activities you are undertaking”, he assured.
Earlier speaking, the UNICEF team lead, Dr. Ephrem Tekle Lemango who is an Associate Director of Immunization in the organisation’s Headquarters in Newyork thanked Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his hospitality adding that his team was impressed with what they see in Gombe State with respect to infrastructural and human capital development.
“One of the things that really impressed us is your commitment to health education and economic growth of Gombe State. It says a lot about your commitment and directly implies your faith in investing in young people of Gombe which is very crucial to the future development of the state”, he said.
The UNICEF Team lead appreciated Governor Inuwa’s foresight in deploying women health workers in the revitalised healthcare facilities, observing that many of the maternal and child health care services are better served by women health workers.
Mr Ephrem assured that UNICEF as a partner that works on the improvement of life of children, adolescents and young people will continue to work and support Gombe State Government in areas of common interests.
The World Bank Human Capital team visited Gombe on 18th July, 2022. The team comprised of technical specialist in Governance, Health care financing & Education.
The team which was led by Derby Hanna, paid a courtesy visit to the ES GSPHCDA to assess the implementation status of the NPHCDA gateway of the BHCPF. The team had an interactive session with the ES GSPHCDA, Directors and program officers of the agency.
Highlight of the meeting was a power point presentation by the BHCPF unit. The World Bank team were impressed with the state’s performance with regards to the implementation of the NPHCDA gateway in the State.
The team also visited some PHCs facilities to assess service delivery within Gombe metropolis. The team commended Gombe State Government in it’s effort towards revamping the health system. The World Bank team also visited other line ministries including ministry of Finance, Education among others.
Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency in Partnership With Bill And Melinda Gates Foundation Organised A Five-Day Training Workshop On Leadership And Governance For State, LGA Directors And Some Programme Officers
Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency through Partnership for Improved PHC Performance (PIPP) with support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation organised a five-day training workshop on Leadership and Governance for State, LGA Directors and some Programme Officers. The training aimed at improving the capacity of the Management team on leadership and governance to enhance coordination and productivity in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The Executive Secretary in his opening remarks, Dr. Abdulrahman Shu’iabu charged the participants to use the opportunity to build their capacities and improve on their ability to coordinate their respective areas of responsibilities. He further called on the participants to make the best use of the opportunity by ensuring they participate actively in the workshop.
The workshop which took place at Chartwell Hotel and Suites, Bauchi witnessed the presence of all PHC Directors, all the Directors from the SPHCDA, Programme Officers of SERRIC, SEMCHIC, Malaria, M&E and SIO
Gombe State Task Force on Immunization and PHC under the chairmanship of His Excellency, The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr. Mannasah Daniel Jatau, where in Nafada and Funakaye LGAs for monitoring/supportive supervision visit for the ongoing integrated measles, yellow fever, meningitis and covid 19 mass vaccination campaign.
The Honourable commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru represented the deputy Governor during the visit. The entourage also comprised of Honourable Commissioner for Information, representatives of the commissioner of police, commandant civil defence, road safety, representative of the Emir of Gombe, permanent secretary, Ministry for Local Government, ES GSPHCDA amongst others.
Dr. Dahiru in his remarks before Emirs of Funakaye and Nafada, HRH Alhaji Mu’azu Mohammed Kwairanga and Alhaji Mohammed Dadum Hamza highlighted the objective of the integrated mass vaccination campaign. The Honourable Commissioner also received feedback from both LGA teams as to their coverage of different antigens for the campaign.
In separate responses, the council chairmen of Funakaye and Nafada LGAs, Honourable Ibrahim Adamu Cheldu and Musa Abubakar (Babauro) respectively commended the government of His Excellency, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, The Executive Governor of Gombe State for according health a top priority of his administration.
